Bible Study: Holy Spirit

Hey girl, this week’s post is on none other than Thee Holy Spirit! So today we’ll be going over several scriptures because I want us, together to learn more about The Holy Spirit. This is something that has been on my heart for some time to do because it can be a complex thing to understand.

The Holy Spirit is a person, we talk to Him as a person. Jesus is a person Who was The Word made flesh, The Father is the Creator of all humanity and we are made in His image. These are 3 persons of the triune God and that is honestly very hard to understand with the carnal mind alone, that’s why we must pray for discernment and a heart that is receptive.

Nonetheless, let’s get into the scripture of it all starting with the prophet Isaiah in the amplified version, chapter 11. The focal scripture is 11:2 but read 1-5 for greater context:

11:1

Then a Shoot (the Messiah) will spring from the stock of Jesse [David’s father],
And a Branch from his roots will bear fruit.

11:2

And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him—
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and strength,
The Spirit of knowledge and of the [reverential and obedient] fear of the Lord

11:3

And He will delight in the fear of the Lord,
And He will not judge by what His eyes see,
Nor make decisions by what His ears hear;

11:4

But with righteousness and justice He will judge the poor,
And decide with fairness for the downtrodden of the earth;
And He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth,
And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.

11:5

And righteousness will be the belt around His loins,
And faithfulness the belt around His waist.

11:1 is in reference to us as Christians, if we are rooted in God and the principles of Christianity which is to follow His commandments then we shall be a branch of the vine and bare much fruit according to John 15:5-9. In full context, Isaiah predicted the coming of our Messiah, Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, for what reason He was coming, and how we’d be able to discern that it was truly Him.

For further context on how to discern the presence of The Holy Spirit, we’ll quickly go over the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23:

5:22

But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is love [unselfish concern for others], joy, [inner] peace, patience [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting], kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

5:23

gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Now in direct opposition of The Holy Spirit is the flesh and the fruits of those are in Galatians 5:19-21:

5:19

Now the practices of the sinful nature are clearly evident: they are sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality (total irresponsibility, lack of self-control),

5:20

idolatry, sorcery, hostility, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions [that promote heresies],

5:21

envy, drunkenness, riotous behavior, and otherthings like these. I warn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Let’s quickly look over 1 Corinthians 2:7-16:

2:7

but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the wisdom once hidden [from man, but now revealed to us by God, that wisdom] which God predestined before the ages to our glory [to lift us into the glory of His presence].

2:8

None of the rulers of this age recognized and understood this wisdom; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory;

2:9

but just as it is written [in Scripture],

Things which the eye has not seen and the ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him [who hold Him in affectionate reverence, who obey Him, and who gratefully recognize the benefits that He has bestowed].”

2:10

For God has unveiled them and revealed them to us through the [Holy] Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things [diligently], even [sounding and measuring] the [profound] depths of God [the divine counsels and things far beyond human understanding].

2:11

For what person knows the thoughts and motives of a man except the man’s spirit within him? So also no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

2:12

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the [Holy] Spirit who is from God, so that we may know and understand the [wonderful] things freely given to us by God

2:13

We also speak of these things, not in words taught or supplied by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining and interpreting spiritual thoughts with spiritual words [for those being guided by the Holy Spirit].

2:14

But the natural [unbelieving] man does not accept the things [the teachings and revelations] of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness [absurd and illogical] to him; and he is incapable of understanding them, because they are spiritually discerned and appreciated, [and he is unqualified to judge spiritual matters].

2:15

But the spiritual man [the spiritually mature Christian] judges all things [questions, examines and applies what the Holy Spirit reveals], yet is himself judged by no one [the unbeliever cannot judge and understand the believer’s spiritual nature].

2:16

For who has known the mind and purposes of the Lord, so as to instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ [to be guided by His thoughts and purposes].

So when we operate in the flesh, we bare the fruits of the flesh. Because the flesh is enmity to the Spirit of God due to the fall of humanity, it becomes hard to hear from The Holy Spirit when you haven’t been spiritually disciplined, it takes time and intention. So now let’s journey to John 14:15-17 in the KJV:

14:15

If ye love me, keep my commandments.

14:16

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

14:17

Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

First of all the Holy Spirit is a gift to us, and the Ultimate Gift at that because Jesus literally died so that we may receive of Him. We are very expensive and precious and in this moment Jesus is teaching us how to honor Him first by receiving of His precious Holy Spirit, how to honor the Holy Spirit by realizing not everyone will inherit His Spirit because the world or our fleshly nature won’t receive of Him by choice because it chooses to not see Him. Don’t we all know how that feels to not be seen? Imagine the rejection our Abba feels that His only Son died for us to be nearer to Him and not hell and we continually reject Him. So in getting to know Him better, we honor Him. By what we’re doing today, we honor Him.

Jesus also teaches us to honor ourselves and even how to be in relationships in the same breath by modeling to us how He communicates His love language. He starts verse 15 with “if you love me.” He is telling us this is how you show that you love Him and He’s teaching us how to stand up for ourselves in love, how to say “hey, this is how I need to be loved.”

Now let’s go to verse 26 in the AMP:

14:26

But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.

This is telling us specifically Who the Holy Spirit is to us; He is our Comforter, we can go to Him with our every hurt or happiness and He’ll be there to comfort us in ways only our Creator can. I have been cheered up so many times by The Holy Spirit. There have been times that He would just bring a thought to my mind that would make me laugh in the middle of me full on ugly crying lol.

He is our Advocate and Intercessor meaning He will Advocate for us in the courts of heaven by praying for us those things that we just don’t know we need prayer for. So if you have the gift of tongues, this is what that’s all about, He’s praying very specific prayers catered to you.

He is our Counselor and Strengthener meaning He is good for a good ole vent session where you really just need to get something off of your chest. There’s been several times I’ve gone to Him and was like “Abba, in the name of Jesus was it really my fault this time because I don’t feel like it was LOL” and I’ll wait for the revelation, sometimes it doesn’t come for a while but God is faithful so it’ll come when you’re ready to hear it lol. And that’s the Strengthener part, His word is a double edged sword so don’t expect to be coddled and babied all of the time because He desires for you to grow and be mature and a holistically functioning human being who is made in His image. We are a reflection of Him so He will continue to refine us into His image if we allow Him to.

And then it says Standby which, using my context clues, I gather it means He is always standing by waiting and willing to love on us in the ways we need. Like a Father.

So The Holy Spirit is our own personal Jesus in a sense lol and as we read His word, follow His commandments, and model after Him He will help us in our infirmities or in our weaknesses, so as long as we are trying and committing to the journey He will teach us and remind us of those things He’s taught us before as we are steadily reading His word and hiding those scriptures that minister to us in our hearts.

Follow me to Romans 8:26:

8:26

In the same way the Spirit [comes to us and] helps us in our weakness. We do not know what prayer to offer or how to offer it as we should, but the Spirit Himself [knows our need and at the right time] intercedes on our behalf with sighs and groanings too deep for words.

Think not that only those with the gift of tongues have the Holy Ghost praying for them. Holy Spirit cares and loves us so much that there are times that we can do nothing but sob, groan, yell, cry out for God to hear us and that is it, that is the prayer. I am reminded of a time where I was praying with my mom and my heart was so heavy and I was just overcome with grief all I could say was “Father, in the name of Jesus, hear my heart” and I just sobbed with her and that was it, that was the prayer. It is not complex, our Abba knows us intimately. He is omniscient meaning He is all knowing. And He sees you, He is Jehovah Elroy. He is the God of All, call out Yahweh Elyon. He loves you!

Finally, let’s head over to Matthew 12:31-33:

12:31

“Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy[every evil, abusive, injurious speaking, or indignity against sacred things] will be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the [Holy] Spirit will not be forgiven.

12:32

Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit [by attributing the miracles done by Me to Satan] will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

12:33

“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is recognized and judged by its fruit.

Let’s be very clear,  Jesus does not play about Himself okay and I don’t blame Him. Imagine gifting someone one of your kidneys and they turn around and spit in your face and say they didn’t get it from you or they never knew you, just blatantly lie or are just ungrateful and hateful to you after risking your life to save theirs! It would be a cold day in hell before I ever looked at that person the same. And with The Lord, you will literally just be going to hell, do not pass go just straight on to the fiery pits. That’s really scary to think about. But that’s His boundary to keep and an excellent model for us to learn to keep ours as well. We cannot, especially as women, give, give, give with no reciprocity because we’re good for it. Our nature is just like the Holy Ghost, to be giving and catering, and nurturing, praying for others, all the things right? But there’s a delicate balance of give and take. The bible says there is a JUST balance and we must count the cost of a thing continually.

Well that ends this bible study. I hope you enjoyed this and I pray it ministered to you because it definitely did to me, thank you Holy Spirit love you down! Keep reading your bible and not each other and go to church because we still need to do that lol.

Love you, bye 💗
